The Legend of the Sleeping Giant
 
Long ago, a giant named Matau*kidnapped a chief’s daughter and brought her to his lair. Her lover followed them and waited until the wind stilled—then crept in and set fire to the giant while he slept. The flames consumed Matau, but his massive body left a deep hollow in the earth.
 
That hollow filled with water, becoming Lake Wakatipu. But Matau’s heart never stopped beating—and the lake still rises and falls gently every few minutes, as if he’s still breathing under the surface.
